New high-speed rail project in Thailand
The Chinese and Thai governments have reached agreement over the first phase of a high-speed rail link in Thailand. The long-running discussions regarding the 873 km network have largely been stalled by disagreements over costs.
This week, however, following three days of talks with Chinese officials, Thailand’s transport minister, Arkhom Termpittayapaisith said both sides had agreed a price of 179 billion baht (US$ 5.1 billion) for the first phase.
The line will run 271 km, from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima, and will be followed by two more phases: a 355 km section, from Nakhon Ratchasima to Nong Khai province, bordering Laos; and a 246.5 km section, from Saraburi province to Rayong province.
As part of the latest agreement, Thailand will pay for all rail construction, while China is set to fund the line’s technical systems. The agreement marks another important step in China’s One Belt, One Road strategy, which aims to integrate the region into a cohesive economic area.

Types of rail fastening systems for high speed rail project
In contrast with rail fastening systems for common railroad project, high speed rail fastening systems are quite different both in technical parameters and construction requirements. Next are some types of rail fastening systems for high speed rail project.
Fast Clip Fastening System
The fast clip fastening system has substantial global references on both concrete and steel applications. Fast clip fastening is a threadless fastening, with low maintenance and pre-assembly of the fastening which remains captive on the rail sleepers.
Fast clip fastening has been designed as a total system, in which all components are delivered to site pre-assembled on rail sleepers. Once the sleepers are laid, and the rail installed, the rail clip is simply pushed onto the rail by means of a simple drive action.
The features of fast clip fastening system:
- Rapid installation capability (up to 70 sleepers per minute)
- Pre-assembly and captive on rail sleeper
- Threadless, self tensioned fastening system
- Suitable for all track categories
Nabla Evolution Fastening System
Original Nabla Fastening Systems have provided safe and reliable tracks in Tram, LRT, Metro, Main Line and High Speed tracks. The special shape of the Nabla blade generates a dynamically stable toe load on steel rails when the rail nut is torqued.
The Nabla Evolution fastening system gives greater performance in tight radius curves, maintains consistent rail gauge, increased electrical insulation and improves the overall life expectancy of the assembly components.
- Tightening to refusal providing a constant force on the rail foot
- Lateral adjustment in 1.25mm increment
- Maintains efficient track gauge control and limits rail movement
The Nabla Evolution Fastening System can be used on concrete sleepers in ballast, tram systems (with or without plastic tie plates) and can also be provided for track structure interface using reduced or zero toe load.
